Heather began taking ballet and tap dancing lessons at the age of three. She continued her studies at the Christiansen Academy, the Ballet West Conservatory, Pacific Northwest Ballet School and the University of Utah Ballet Department (both on scholarship). She joined Ballet West in 1991 as an aspirant. In 1994, she was promoted to artist and to senior artist in 1995. She has performed in many classical and contemporary productions including Lady of the Camellias, Lambarena, Prawn Watching, Coppélia, Alice in Wonderland, The Nutcracker, Peter Pan, Queen of Spades, Requiem, The Dream, and Swan Lake.
